About this Concentration

Campus: Colby College Grades: 10-12

In this program, investigate medical interventions from diagnosis to design to implementation. You’ll learn to interpret medical images and use them to diagnose illnesses and injuries in animal specimens. With a diagnosis in hand, you’ll design a medical solution, test its viability with scaled prototypes, then surgically implant the device you designed into your specimen or model. Through simulated surgeries and connecting with medical experts, discover how the latest biomedical technology is being used to create cutting-edge solutions for the most pressing medical challenges we face today. Gain experience with medical interventions such as: treating a clogged artery, engineering a replacement MCL, and designing a reconstructive device to repair a bone fracture. Practice surgical techniques, from holding a scalpel to cutting through layers of tissue with precision. Discover both the engineer’s and medical practitioners' toolboxes and how they are used to make observations, identify needs, design and manufacturer devices, and test them. Through this program you will experience the entire process through the eyes of a Doctor, Medical Illustrator, Biomedical Engineer, Surgeon, or Rehabilitation Therapist.

  • Tissue Engineering Challenge with Dr. Glenn Gaudette

    Dr. Gaudette is a pioneering researcher in bioengineering and human tissue repair. Work with Gaudette and his team to employ cutting-edge techniques used by biomedical researchers at WPI and Boston College. Design and build prototypes of a new medical device using decellularized plant materials. Create tests to push the limits of functionality, durability and ease of deployment and present your designs to a panel of medical research experts.

  • Guided Surgery + Surgical Skills Training with Dr. Erika K. Fellinger

    Dr. Fellinger was named “Top Doc” in Boston by Boston Magazine. Work side-by-side with Dr. Fellinger as she guides you through an abdominal surgery. You’ll get an introduction to OR basics such as maintaining a sterile field and practice surgical techniques using a variety of instruments.

  • EXPLO Pre-College + Career students are required to bring a laptop, computer, tablet, or Chromebook to the program. All devices must be able to access the Internet and utilize basic word processing and presentation-type programs (PowerPoint, Keynote, etc.) Rentals are available after enrollment in the program. You always have to be thinking ahead about how to make things better. It can be challenging to do this in surgery — to become a caveman on a wheel — because you become so adept at operating in one specific way with a familiar set of instruments. But advancement in robotics and technology over the past few decades has been remarkable, and embracing technology in the right places can vastly improve patient outcomes.
