Jurassic Science: The Life of the Dinosaur

Join us in the lab and out at our active dig site as we explore the chemistry and biology of dinosaurs.

About this Workshop

Campus: Regis College | Rising Grades: 4,5

We’ve just discovered a bonebed at EXPLO and it’s up to you and a team of paleontologists to investigate the site and uncover the mysteries of the lost dinosaur buried in the earth. We’ll work both in the field and in the lab to discover more about the fossilized remains and piece together our dinosaur’s life story. From identifying the species to hypothesizing where they were going and how they lived—we can do it all with science! Did they have feathers like the theropods? Or were they horned and frilled like Triceratops? We’ll study their diet by examining their teeth and stomach contents and even explore the chemical processes involved in the coloration of their skin and feathers from melanin. From asteroids and volcanic eruptions to extreme climates, dinosaurs had to be pretty resilient to exist in such a perilous world. Get ready to unleash your inner explorer and embark on a prehistoric adventure like no other!

Highlights

Use special tools and techniques to carefully excavate and transport dinosaur bones in our active dig site.

Study the conditions required to make fossils by creating your own in the lab.

Explore the fascinating field of paleoart by experimenting with pigments to recreate the possible colors of dinosaurs.

Learn about survival behaviors used by dinosaurs to adapt to natural disasters and extreme environments.
