18-1What Lights Me Up

“I joined theater this semester and it’s a blast! I like being part of this giant group putting together a musical. We’re doing Chicago. I’m working on sets and costumes. When I’m not doing that, I have a part-time job at the humane society. Dogs. Are. My. Life. I want to adopt them all!”

My Day at EXPLO

Breakfast
8:00 AM

I arrived early so that I could meet up with friends at Bagel Street Cafe for a quick bite before our trip.

Psychology + Neuroscience
Periods 1 + 2
9:00 AM

USCF Med School

Headed to San Fran where we met with research scientists at the University of California San Francisco med school.  Checked out the neuroscience lab and their work on how the brain processes the feelings of satiation after eating. The grad students were so excited about their work. I was surprised how much I liked the vibe in the lab. Wonder if this is what I may want to do after college.

Lunch
12:00 PM

Got back to Berkeley in time to eat at Crossroads. Gotta say, it’s UC's flagship dining hall and it’s pretty good.

Psychology + Neuroscience Period 3
1:30 PM

Our prof described how  neuroplasticity works – incredible! –  and then another neuroscientist came in to show us how music can be used to rewire the brain.

Quick Campanile Visit
3:00 PM

Walking back through campus to the dorms, we stopped by the Campanile, and rode to the observation deck. It’s amazing. You can see for miles from the Berkeley hills to the San Francisco Bay.

Free Time
4:00 PM

After a busy few days, my friends and I decided to do a bit of shopping on Telegraph Ave — we visited some amazing book and music stores.

Trip to Fort Mason
5:30 PM

My advisors, Jacinda and Cally, led the “Off the Grid” trip. Hundreds of food trucks, along with crafts vendors and musical performances, right on the bay at Fort Mason park. It was so much fun.

Campus Departure
10:00 PM

Because I went on the Fort Mason trip, I went home a little later than usual. Thankfully, I can park close to the dorms and EXPLO student center. Tomorrow, my friends and I are going to the Ferry Building, Alcatraz, Haight-Ashbury, and then on Sunday we’re headed to Fisherman’s Wharf, cable cars, and Chinatown.

Even though I live nearby, it’s just so different exploring with people from other parts of the country and the world.

Pick your program. Explore. Have summer fun.
