“I’ve always known I wanted to be a doctor, but I’ve never been sure what kind—there are so many! I love working with kids, so pediatrics sounds good, but I’m fascinated by surgery too, so I’m learning as much anatomy as I can, in school and just on my own. I may need to narrow it down if I’m ever going to make it my life.”

My Day at EXPLO

Breakfast
8:00 AM

I woke up extra early today to make it to the morning running club before breakfast.

Concentration Periods 1 + 2
9:00 AM

Medical Rotations

We went to a simulation lab at Brigham + Women’s Hospital today and learned this is where Harvard students practice.  It’s set up like a hospital with robots that talk and function like people.  One patient went into cardiac arrest and we needed to do CPR and then apply the AED machine.  We thought we had lost him, but we were able to bring him back.  It was scary and exciting at the same time.  Dr. Eyre who is the medical director of the sim lab told us he worked at EXPLO all through college and he just thinks EXPLO is incredible and has stayed connected ever since.  He gave us his contact info and told us to reach out in the future if we have questions.  He was so generous.

Lunch
12:30 PM

They actually have good veg options here.  I had a broccoli and cauliflower casserole and made a salad with cucumbers, mint, and pistachios.

Concentration Period 3
2:00 PM

Medical Rotations

Yesterday we worked with a nurse who trained us on phlebotomy procedures.  We put that to use today.  We got back to the quad and there was an emergency medical situation with four people that we had to triage. We worked in pairs, examined the patients and filled out triage cards on each.  I didn’t actually put in an IV, but I noticed that one person’s injuries were going to make that hard to do so I noted that on my triage card.  It was kind of heart-stopping, but I really felt in my element. I’m thinking maybe Emergency Medicine might be my thing.  That’s what Dr. Eyre specialized in, and now he teaches at Harvard Medical School.  I just might contact him when I get home.

Community Meeting
3:45 PM

Open Time
4:00 PM

I called my little sister, Sangeeta, who is nine.  My mom told me she misses me and needed a call.  After that, the weather was so perfect, that my friends and I just hung out on Munger Meadow near Paramecium Pond and soaked up the sun. This campus is so beautiful and I love the science center and I’m wondering if I should put Wellesley on my college list.

Dinner
6:00 PM

Tonight I had tofu tikka masala. Not as good as my mom’s, but a lot better than I expected. There was a staff DJ taking music requests through dinner.  My friends and I kept requesting Broadway songs, and we couldn’t help but sing along. Not completely sure that everyone around us loved the singing, but most seemed like they did.

Living Group Check-In
7:15 PM

I told Esse, my RA all about the simulation lab today. I love talking to her.  She’s a bio major – pre-med – and she was so excited to hear what we had done.

Evening Programs
7:30 PM

There’s a trip to Dave and Buster’s tonight, but I might watch a movie in the lounge instead…

Residence Hall Check-In
10:15 PM

I had a chill night in the movie lounge where we watched Pitch Perfect. I see that on tomorrow’s Atlas, one of the activities is Lobster Fight Club. Not sure what that is but very curious to find out.  Chatted with Esse, Juno, and Abby about the day and whether we should do sunrise yoga tomorrow morning.
