What Lights Me Up

“I guess you’d call me an art nerd—that’s what me and my friends call ourselves. Paint and charcoal are my favorite media. I’m in two art clubs and I work on our school yearbook too.”

My Day at EXPLO

Breakfast
8:00 AM

I got up pretty early today and was one of the first people in the dining hall. I filled up my plate with waffles with Strawberries. And a huge cup of coffee before heading to class.

Workshop Period 1
9:00 AM

Studio Art

Yesterday, our instructor, Dale, took us to the Davis Art Museum, where we met with a curator who took us through some of the collections. Today we’re back in the studio.  I did a quick charcoal sketch, but then I talked to Dale about an idea for a mixed-media piece for a final project. He really helped me refine my idea. This is a great day.

Workshop Period 2
11:00 AM

Architecture

Last week we walked around the LuLu Wang Center, which is a pretty cool building and it has no right angles.  Today, we built models of our designs – with no right angles! – and it was more challenging than I thought it would be. It’s a little like the sculptures I used to build with cardboard, but a lot more precise.  These models are going in the art and design show at the end of the session.

Lunch
12:30 PM

Had chili, a mound of grilled asparagus and Jasmine rice.  Oh, and gelato.  I can’t believe they make it here.  Had lunch with Robin who had this strange combo of cheese pizza, egg salad, and bean salad.  She cracks me up.

College Planning: The College Essay and Application

I know we have to write a college personal essay in Junior Year, so I wanted to get a jumpstart.  It's been so great to be around all my instructors, RAs, and staff - I'm learning so much about their colleges and individual journeys. There are so many opportunities, and I am getting really excited about what I might study.

Community Meeting
3:45 PM

Open Time
4:00 PM

I went to Pride Club again today. I’ve become so close with everyone in the club. It’s hard to believe I only met them two weeks ago!

Dinner
6:00 PM

A few of us from Pride Club walked into town for dinner tonight. We got really good Mediterranean food. It was so great to be out and explore the town and check out all the restaurants.  Loved having the freedom to be with my friends.

Living Group Check-In
7:15 PM

My RA let me know that I have a package in the Main Office. My parents must have sent something. I can’t wait to see what it is!

Evening Programs
7:30 PM

Tonight was the Halloween Dance. I brought my Poison Ivy costume from home that I made last year. My roommate didn’t bring a costume, so we borrowed clothes and makeup from a couple of people in our hall and were able to put together a pretty good Daphne from Scooby Doo costume.

Residence Hall Check-In
10:15 PM

A girl in my hall brought a friendship bracelet making kit to check-in and our RA helped us all make matching ones. Everyone was pretty wiped from running around at the dance. This place is amazing, and I just love the friends I’ve made here. I took a quick shower and then went right to bed.

Pick your program. Get ahead. Have summer fun.
